I needed 7 minutes on foot from my apartment to the University. On that walk, now almost 20 years ago (a bone-chilling thought), I would pass by a magazine shop (now a tailor's place), a whole food store (now a hair salon), a bank (now a bakery), two bakeries (one still in existence), and a bus stop. The dynamic nature of the city fascinates me—the melancholy that change brings, the crankiness of the feeling that the bank is now 5 blocks away instead of one, and the gratefulness that the bakery with the flamboyant ham and cheese croissant still exists. I am all about celebrating small things, and a ham and cheese croissant is one of them.
This city's dynamic was my initial inspiration for the maps that needed to capture the feeling and translate it onto paper—to tell a story about one's life. In this case - my life. And then also all the lives of other people who wanted to turn their simple daily adventures into wall decorations—a celebration of moments, days, and, ultimately, lives.
